Challenges

The Mediterranean Latin Arch is a space with a significant geo-strategic dimension. Located between Europe And the Mediterranean, it occupies an unique place in the world, as demonstrated by its history and its culture.

The Mediterranean Latin Arch has expressed high potentials as alternative economic integration zone on both continental and world level, capable of counterbalancing the weight of Central Europe and of improving balance in the European Community.

Despite its potential strengths, construction of the Mediterranean Latin Arch is still under way in perspective of the 2020 deadline.

Key area between Europe and the Mediterranean basin, MLA will be taking up no less than 10 challenges.

  1. To reduce social, economic and local inequalities.
  2. To manage internal mobility and international migrations.
  3. To reach the European average in terms of occupation.
  4. To join and connect company and innovation networks and to consolidate their international vocation.
  5. To increase public and private efforts in Research & Development and in the matter of innovation.
  6. To consolidate the influence and complementarity of metropolitan areas in the MLA.
  7. To create an East/West intermodal transportation network:-to complete the MLA high speed line -    to develop combined road-sea and road-rail transport.
  8. To integrate environmental protection, resource management and fighting pollution in a perspective of sustainable development.
  9. To control the exploitation of space and environmental impact despite the pressure of tourism and building.
  10. To develop an exchange and good practice network focusing on suitable development between MLA operators and areas.

Key numbers of MLA

  • 65 million inhabitants, 15 % of the EU 25
  • 28 million workers, 12.3 % of the EU 25
  • Unemployment rate: 9.1 %, versus 8.3 % EU 25
  • 5 million companies and 2 million hotel beds
  • GDP (PPP) per inhabitant: 21,900 vs. 23,318 EU 25
  • R&D/GDP expenditure ratio: 1.42 %, versus 1.83 % EU 27
